With the cost of heating at the mercy of the utility companies or the big oil companies it is nice to know that there is away to get back some of our energy independence .
Solar water heaters can provide a source of hot water that is both environmentally sound and financially possible. Solar power is not just for the western United States or the south; even in the dead of winter states like Minnesota get their share of the sun.
Harnessing the solar energy in upper Midwest is not that much different than that of the south west. At its simplest running lengths of garden hose on your roof is basic solar water heating, water pressure gets the water up on the roof and gravity feeds the water into your water heater, no moving parts. This is what is known as a passive open loop system, and is suitable for warm year around climates; an active open loop system has a wider range of climates.
The active open loop while it is more expensive, it will work in areas of the country that have freezing weather. The use of pumps and secondary heating will allow the system to work through out the winter. This system is not a ‘pure’ solar hot water heater but a hybrid, savings in energy use will still make this a good choice in the colder portions of our country.
Choosing the right type of solar water heater system for your home can be made easier with the help of trained professionals.
